Today at work I bought a Lonely Planet Kyoto City Guide (love my 25% staff discount). Looking forward to spending many a happy hour flicking through it.

Also, bought a new phone - probably the cheapest one out there - a Nokia 1661. Don't think it will work while I'm in Japan though, so will probably have to buy a phone over there. The Softbank is really common among students in Japan, apparently. Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz also use them regularly. Why else would they star in their commercials.

There is a great and noble tradition of Western actors coming over to Japan and making sometimes ridiculous, but always well-paying commercials for japanese products.

I believe the correct term for an actor who does this is a
Japander.Pander: 1. go-between in clandestine amours, procurer; one who ministers to evil designs. 2. minister (to base passions or evil designs, or person having these)
Japander: 1. a western star who uses his or her fame to make large sums of money in a short time by advertising products in Japan that they would probably never use. ~er (see synecure, prostitute) 2. to make an ass of oneself in Japanese media.
There's a
whole site dedicated to this!
